Class Acts
The crowd at Barneys lined up to have the tea leaves read. Derek Blasberg, natty in Burberry, was furiously signing copies of his new book Classy and making extemporaneous assessments. The question on the table: Are you a lady or a tramp?
“Tramp!” he barked at Calvin Klein Collection creative director Francisco Costa, who, far from looking offended, giggled appreciatively. An oversized button—”I’ve Read Classy and I’m a Tramp”—was administered. Judging from the lapels of the throng that crowded the store’s second floor, it was the trampiest event in town. Hostesses Lauren Santo Domingo (in printed Vionnet, which she’d worn with its black apron on the inside, more to her liking), Chloë Sevigny (in Proenza Schouler, flanked by Jack and Lazaro), and Dasha Zhukova seemed to be the only ones beyond suspicion. The author himself, however, did get the classy seal of approval from Paper magazine’s Mickey Boardman, who’s known him for years. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen Derek do anything trashy,” Boardman said. At least, “he’s always so excited and happy to be where he is, it doesn’t seem trashy when he does it.”
At the celebratory dinner that followed chez Santo Domingo—decorated sustainably for the evening with gorgeous arrangements of succulents and handblown glass terraria by artist Paula Hayes on loan from the Marianne Boesky Gallery—the hostesses were joined by Chris Benz, Rachel Roy, Pat McGrath, and even Mom and Pop Blasberg, in from St. Louis for the occasion. Stylist Edward Enninful passed around a newly rediscovered portrait of the artist as a young(er) man from when they’d met years before—DB at 18 on the London club scene, impressive entourage already in formation. The banquet table last night seemed a long, Classy way from the clubs. But, then again, the night was still young.

Funny People
It’s being hyped as a comedy match made in heaven—Steve Carell and Tina Fey as a suburban couple whose plans for a romantic evening in Manhattan go horribly, outrageously awry. In Date Night, out this Friday, a case of mistaken identity turns an innocent dinner for two into a nightmare of flying bullets, death-defying car stunts, and, finally, a ludicrous (and apparently entirely improvised) tandem striptease. “It was like Angelina Jolie fantasy camp,” said Fey, who was wearing a blue organza Christian Cota number at last night’s premiere at the Ziegfeld.
The co-stars—both securely married, albeit not to each other—have been off the market for quite some time, and seem to prefer it that way. “I was not much of a dater, and I think Tina’s the same way,” Carell ventured, an assessment Fey was quick to confirm. “I went on so few dates that I wouldn’t even know if they were terrible,” she said. As someone more battle-hardened in this department, her 30 Rock co-star Alec Baldwin offered his thoughts on the perfect date—”a woman who gives you a reason to stay home, so you don’t go out at all.” Still, there’s something to be said for a night for two on the town, especially if you’re an A-list comedian. As Carell said of himself and his wife: “Our date nights recently have consisted mostly of going to awards shows.”

Drape Night
Ginnifer Goodwin allows that she’s quite the “fashion girl,” so if it took a little designer homework to get up to speed on Vionnet, the Big Love actress was ready for it. “I was obsessed with my Golden Globes dress this year. It was the first time that I ever wore the label, and I didn’t know much about it, so I read up on the history.” Goodwin was equally entranced by the charcoal cutout velvet number she wore to host a party at Saks last night for the storied French house’s new designer, Rodolfo Paglialunga—not to mention the thigh-high vegan boots he made for her. “I want to keep the idea of how Madeleine Vionnet made clothes that were good and flattering for women,” said Paglialunga, “but, of course, to make it fresh as well.”
That’s a persuasive combination for Saks president and chief merchandising officer Ron Frasch—the department store has installed the brand in a dedicated section on the designer third floor. As for his hosting duties, which he shared with Goodwin, Vogue‘s Virginia Smith, and Vionnet’s Matteo Marzotto, Frasch joked, “I’m in it for the women.” There were plenty of those on hand, including model Jessica Stam, Sophomore’s Chrissie Miller, and Lauren Remington Platt. Wearing head-to-toe Vionnet, Platt commented, “I call this a ‘buddy outfit,’ because I need a friend to help me get it on.”
